Is It Time To Replace Your Furniture?

Thursday, October 6th, 2016

How to know when your furniture is beyond repair.

If you have a beloved couch in your living room, you know that a great couch can bring the whole family together. When you host friends and guests for parties, your couch and complementary furniture are extremely important in facilitating a great night. Aside from the investment you’ve made in purchasing high-quality pieces, your furniture becomes part of the family and that can make it hard to let go.

Though you may love that microfiber couch or leather sofa, years of use and love can leave your pieces looking worn and faded. Eastern — The Furniture Company offers tips to maintain your furniture and ways to know when it’s time to replace your pieces.

Top 5 Signs It’s Time For A New Couch

  1. You Sink In — If your cushions are flattening or your knees are creeping up to your chin when you sit down, you are probably not comfortable. If you’ve been finding it hard to stand up after sinking in, it might be an indicator you need a new couch.
  2. Fringe & Wear — Years of couch and armchair use can create fringe, or a bumpy texture on your pieces. If your couch is no longer smooth and soft, it’s a sign you should replace it.
  3. Fading Color Situating a piece of furniture near a window can cause fading due to sunlight exposure. Check for sections that are faded near the seat of the cushions, arm rests, and back of the sofa.
  4. Creaking & Spring Movement — Does your couch creak and groan when you sit down? Chances are the springs are rusted or worn out, which also means your couch is sinking in. Replacing the springs or repairing a couch that creaks is not worth the expense.
  5. Remodeling — The sight of an old, fading couch can inhibit your home renovation. Opt for a more comfortable model to match your new décor.

Maintain Your Furniture

  1. Be mindful of furniture placement. Sofas situated near a window can experience premature fading due to sunlight exposure. Rearrange your room with the seasons to avoid fading fabrics.
  2. Place felt or cork adhesives underneath wooden furniture to prevent scratches on your floor.
  3. Clean any spills or spots immediately after they happen. Avoid drinking and eating near your upholstered furniture.
  4. Have your pieces professionally cleaned at least twice a year. We recommend cleaning before spring and fall.

Work in harmony with your experienced interior designer.

Whether you’re remodeling a kid’s playroom or you’re completely changing your living space, an interior decorator can help guide you through the redecorating process. Aside from the resources, contacts and expertise that an interior decorator has, it is always helpful to have another set of eyes when choosing new furniture pieces and décor.

Eastern — The Furniture Company designers will envision, plan and outfit spaces in a way that is both beautiful and functional.

Before Getting Started…

Our designers will want to know more about your project goals before we begin. Consider the following to prepare for your consultation with our team.

  • For whom is the space being designed?
  • What activities will take place there?
  • How long do you plan to occupy the space?
  • What is your time frame and budget?
  • Are you relocating or remodeling?
  • What style do you want to project?
  • Are there features you want to highlight?
  • What is the approximate square footage to be designed?
